Taipei, Taiwan — February 11, 2026
Taiwan experienced a noticeable shift in weather conditions early Tuesday morning as a fast-moving frontal system passed through the island, followed by a strengthening northeast monsoon, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
After the front moved across the region at dawn, cloud cover increased over windward areas, particularly in Taoyuan and locations further north, as well as across eastern Taiwan. Intermittent light rain was reported along the Keelung North Coast, eastern regions, and the Hengchun Peninsula. Parts of Greater Taipei and nearby mountainous areas also saw isolated showers, while the rest of the country remained mostly cloudy to sunny.
Cooler Mornings, Mild Afternoons
Temperatures during the early morning hours were affected by radiative cooling, bringing a cooler feel to much of the island. Low temperatures in central and northern Taiwan, including Yilan, ranged between 13°C and 15°C. Southern Taiwan and eastern coastal areas recorded slightly warmer lows of 16°C to 18°C.
Daytime highs showed a modest decline in the north, with temperatures in northern Taiwan and the Yilan–Hualien area reaching around 19°C to 22°C. In contrast, central and southern regions, along with Taitung, saw warmer conditions, with highs ranging from 24°C to 27°C.
Low Temperature Advisory Issued
At 4:36 a.m., the CWA issued a low-temperature advisory, warning that continued radiative cooling could cause temperatures to dip below 10°C in parts of Nantou County and Kinmen County. These areas were placed under a yellow alert, signaling potentially cold conditions from early morning through late morning.
Offshore Islands and Air Quality
Weather conditions in offshore islands remained relatively stable. Penghu experienced sunny to partly cloudy skies with temperatures between 17°C and 20°C. Kinmen reported similar conditions, with temperatures ranging from 13°C to 19°C, while Matsu saw cloudy skies with occasional rain and cooler temperatures of 11°C to 14°C.
In terms of air quality, the Hualien–Taitung air quality zone recorded “good” levels. Most other regions, including northern Taiwan, central and southern areas, Yilan, as well as Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, were rated “moderate.”
Outlook for the Coming Days
Another frontal system is expected to pass through early Wednesday, February 12, bringing slightly cooler daytime temperatures to northern and northeastern Taiwan. Mornings and evenings across the island will remain cool. Light, scattered rain is forecast for the Keelung North Coast, eastern Taiwan, the Hengchun Peninsula, and parts of northern mountainous areas, while other regions are expected to stay partly cloudy.
From Wednesday daytime onward, the northeast monsoon is forecast to weaken, allowing temperatures to gradually rise, though cooler conditions will persist during early mornings and nights. From Friday, February 13, through Sunday, February 15 (the eve of the Lunar New Year’s Eve), most areas are expected to see fair to partly cloudy weather, with larger day-to-night temperature differences in western Taiwan. Isolated light rain may affect southeastern and eastern regions at times.
Looking ahead to Monday, February 16 (Lunar New Year’s Eve), another frontal system and renewed northeast monsoon are forecast to bring cooler weather to northern and northeastern Taiwan. By Tuesday, February 17 (the first day of the Lunar New Year), cooler conditions are expected to continue in the north and northeast, with early morning and evening chills elsewhere. Localized rain is likely in northern, northeastern, and eastern regions, while the rest of the island can expect mostly cloudy to sunny skies.
