Taiwanese Man Arrested for Assaulting Filipino Toddler at Taipei Main Station

Taipei, Taiwan – April 26, 2026 — Authorities have detained a 40-year-old man surnamed Li following a disturbing incident involving a young child at one of Taiwan’s busiest transport hubs.

According to the Railway Police Bureau, the incident occurred on the afternoon of April 25 inside the main hall of Taipei Main Station. A Filipino family visiting Taiwan had been resting in the area when their 3-year-old daughter began playing and running nearby.

Investigators said the suspect, apparently irritated by the child’s behavior, followed her before suddenly attacking. Witnesses reported that the man kicked the child, causing her to fall, and then proceeded to step on her with force even after she was already on the ground.

Police officers responded swiftly after receiving reports of the assault. The suspect was located and arrested near the station’s West Gate 1 exit. He was subsequently taken into custody and referred to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office for further investigation on charges of physical injury.

During questioning later that evening, prosecutors noted concerns about the suspect’s behavior. Authorities revealed that Li has no fixed residence and had previously been involved in a similar violent incident at Songshan Station, where he allegedly attacked a woman. Due to the risk of repeat offenses and possible flight, prosecutors filed a request for his detention.

On the afternoon of April 26, the Taipei District Court approved the request and ordered the suspect held in custody pending further proceedings.

In response to the incident, the Railway Police Bureau announced plans to strengthen security measures within Taipei Main Station. Increased patrols will be implemented across key areas, including the ground-floor lobby, underground passageways connecting to metro lines, and platform levels.

Officials also confirmed the formation of a joint monitoring team composed of station staff and security personnel. The team will focus on identifying and addressing unusual or disruptive behavior, aiming to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of passengers.

The condition of the child has not been publicly disclosed, but the case has raised concerns about public safety and the protection of vulnerable individuals in crowded transit spaces.
