Kaohsiung, Taiwan — Jan. 19, 2026
Two Filipino migrant workers were killed in a traffic accident involving a large cargo truck in Kaohsiung’s Luzhu District on Tuesday morning, police said.
The crash occurred at around 9 a.m. on Zhongshan South Road near No. 118, an area affected by ongoing road construction that had narrowed traffic lanes. A 32-year-old man surnamed Fang was driving a large cargo truck southbound when it collided with a motorcycle carrying two people.
Both riders were knocked to the ground, dragged, and became trapped beneath the truck, dying at the scene.
According to police, the motorcycle rider was a 30-year-old Filipino male migrant worker who was legally employed in Taiwan and held a valid Taiwanese heavy motorcycle license. The passenger was a 32-year-old Filipino female migrant worker.
Preliminary investigations indicate that both the truck and the motorcycle were traveling in the same direction when they entered a section of road narrowed by construction. Investigators believe the motorcycle may have moved into the truck’s blind spot during the lane reduction, increasing the risk of collision.
Surveillance footage reviewed by police shows the motorcycle riding along the right side of the truck before drifting toward the vehicle’s right front area, where it was struck and pulled underneath.
Media reports said the female victim was employed at ASE Technology Holding Co. (日月光), while the male victim worked at Dabao Precision (大寶精密). Authorities are still confirming their identities as part of the process of formally notifying their families in the Philippines.
Police completed on-site measurements and evidence collection, and the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation. The case has been referred to the Ciaotou District Prosecutors Office for further examination. The Philippine representative office in Taiwan is assisting local authorities in coordinating with the victims’ families.
