TAIPEI, Taiwan — January 10, 2026

A 44-year-old man surnamed Wang, wanted for multiple thefts near Taipei Main Station, was arrested last year after being on the run for nearly 10 months. Wang allegedly stole around NT$20,000 from internet cafes, hostels, and underground shopping areas. He had been evading police until a chance encounter at the station led to his capture.

Caught by Sharp-Eyed Officer

During a routine duty monitoring a labor protest at Taipei Main Station last November, Corporal Kang Jian-nan of the Zhongzheng First Precinct recognized Wang in the station’s main hall. Kang approached the suspect and confirmed his identity, saying: “You’re the one we’ve been looking for. You’ve committed many crimes here.”

Wang immediately admitted his identity. Police records confirmed that in addition to three theft cases in the precinct, Wang was wanted on three more theft-related warrants issued by prosecutors in Taipei, New Taipei, and Keelung. He was taken into custody, interrogated, and formally charged with theft. The outstanding warrants were also executed.

Details of the Crimes

Authorities reported that since January last year, Wang targeted victims when they were distracted, stealing wallets at internet cafes, hostels, and shopping areas in the underground mall near Taipei Main Station. He reportedly took cash only, leaving other valuables behind, presumably for convenience.

Police Reminder to the Public

The Zhongzheng First Precinct urges the public to stay vigilant when in internet cafes, hostels, or other public spaces. Citizens are advised to use lockers, entrust valuables to trusted friends, and avoid leaving bags unattended or within easy reach of others, to prevent theft and financial loss.
