TAICHUNG, Taiwan — January 10, 2026

A severe cold snap hit Taichung, sending temperatures plunging to around 10°C overnight. On the west district’s Gongyi Road, a woman was found curled up on a fire escape, nearly unnoticed under the cover of night—but at serious risk of hypothermia. Thanks to timely intervention by patrolling police officers, the woman was rescued safely.

Patrol Officers Spot Woman Shivering on Fire Escape

Officers from the Gongyi Precinct, including Officer Si Hao-chung, discovered the woman at 1:20 a.m. on January 8 while patrolling near a store on Gongyi Road. She was lying on the narrow steps, visibly shaking and struggling to cope with the cold. When approached, she startled and attempted to run down the stairs, but Officer Si acted quickly to prevent her from leaving in dangerous conditions.

The 33-year-old woman was found to have been drinking, which likely impaired her judgment. She told officers she had sought shelter on the fire escape after feeling down and did not wish to discuss further details.

Officers Provide Care and Safety Advice

Instead of pressing for explanations, officers focused on her safety. They reassured her, advised against staying outdoors in the cold while intoxicated, and ensured she was conscious and in stable condition. She was repeatedly reminded to return home and rest to avoid hypothermia or other accidents.

Police Urge Public to Stay Alert During Cold Weather

Authorities reminded the public that during cold spells, nighttime temperatures can be dangerously low. Anyone who notices a person collapsed on the street or showing signs of hypothermia should contact police or relevant services immediately.

In this case, a timely act of care by patrolling officers may have prevented a serious accident, highlighting the importance of vigilance and compassion during extreme weather.
