Taipei, Taiwan — December 5, 2025
Taiwan remains under the influence of the northeast monsoon today, bringing noticeably cold and damp weather to northern and northeastern regions. Meteorologists report that daytime temperatures in these areas are expected to stay below 20°C, maintaining a chilly atmosphere throughout the day.
According to weather experts, the monsoon is forecast to weaken by tomorrow, allowing temperatures across the island to slowly rise. Despite this, mornings and evenings will continue to feel cool, particularly in central and southern Taiwan where significant day-to-night temperature differences are expected. Light rain may still occur in Keelung, Yilan, and parts of northern mountainous regions.
Dr. Lin De-en, an atmospheric science specialist from National Taiwan University, noted on his “Teacher Lin’s Weather Station” page that reduced moisture will help improve conditions by the weekend. However, he emphasized that the relief will be temporary.
By Monday, the northeast monsoon is set to strengthen again, sending colder air southward and increasing humidity. Areas north of Taoyuan, as well as Keelung, Yilan, and Hualien, may once again experience intermittent rainfall. Forecasters describe this incoming cold air mass as relatively weak and short-lived.
Dr. Lin also cautioned that a much stronger cold front is expected to arrive around December 13–14. This system has the potential to match or exceed the intensity of the season’s first major continental cold air mass, bringing a sharper and more prolonged drop in temperatures.
Residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and prepare for fluctuating conditions as Taiwan heads into a colder mid-December period.
