Tainan, Taiwan (November 24, 2025)— A cobra measuring about 60 centimeters was spotted this evening along the Shanhaizhen Trail in Annan District, a well-known area where residents regularly walk, jog, and cycle. The unexpected sighting has prompted community leaders to call for increased safety measures and more frequent maintenance along the route.
According to Chen Wenxiang, chairman of the Heshun Industrial Park Factory Association, snakes are occasionally seen in the area due to its natural surroundings. However, he noted that this is the first time a highly venomous cobra has appeared on the trail. He urged local authorities to strengthen weed-clearing efforts to reduce hiding spots for snakes and prevent potential encounters with the public.
Emergency Alert Issued After Cobra Discovery
The Heshun Industrial Park Factory Association released an emergency advisory earlier tonight, warning trail users about the cobra sighting. A group of nearby foreign migrant workers attempted to capture the snake, helping to prevent a possible scare for others passing through the area.
Residents and workers who frequently use the embankment trail are now being advised to remain vigilant. The association recommended paying close attention to foot placement, particularly during low-light hours such as early morning and nighttime. People were also encouraged to carry a flashlight and a walking stick for added safety.
Warm Weather Delays Snake Hibernation
Chen explained that although winter is approaching, temperatures in Tainan remain relatively warm during the day. As a result, snakes have not yet entered full hibernation. The Shanhaizhen Trail, with its surrounding grassy patches and nearby water sources, provides an ideal habitat for various snake species—including cobras.
He reiterated his call for government departments to regularly clear vegetation, fill burrows, and remove potential hiding spots along the trail to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents.
Local residents are urged to stay alert while enjoying outdoor activities and to report any future sightings to authorities immediately.
