A multi-vehicle crash in Puxin Township, Changhua County, late Thursday evening resulted in five people injured after a car lost control and slammed into a 7-Eleven convenience store along Yuanlu Road. Initial speculation from bystanders suggested the incident was linked to street racing; however, police have confirmed that illegal overtaking—not racing—caused the collision.

According to the Xihu Police Precinct, the accident occurred when a driver identified as Mr. Shen attempted to overtake another vehicle by crossing the double yellow lines while traveling from west to east in the inner lane of Yuanlu Road. During the maneuver, Mr. Shen’s vehicle struck a motorcycle that had stopped and was waiting to turn left. The impact caused the car to swerve out of control and crash directly into the convenience store.

The force of the collision triggered a chain reaction involving three other vehicles behind the initial crash. Those cars were unable to brake in time and subsequently rear-ended the wrecked vehicle, resulting in significant damage to all four vehicles involved. A pedestrian standing near the store entrance was also hit by debris.

Emergency responders from the Changhua County Fire Department arrived swiftly, deploying fire trucks and ambulances from nearby stations. The pedestrian suffered a head laceration and a fractured limb and was transported to Yuanji Hospital, where they were reported unconscious upon arrival. The four drivers involved in the crash sustained non-life-threatening injuries and remained conscious as they were taken to the hospital.n

Authorities stated that the presence of several BMW and Mercedes-Benz vehicles parked outside the convenience store led some witnesses to assume the vehicles were racing prior to the crash. However, police emphasized that their investigation found no evidence of street racing or similar illegal activities.

The identities and ages of the involved drivers, as well as the final detailed cause of the sequence of collisions, remain under investigation. Police continue to review nearby CCTV footage and gather witness statements to complete their report.#
