Changhua, Taiwan — November 19, 2025
A switchboard operator at the Hsiu-shui Township Office in Changhua County has touched the community with her act of generosity after choosing to donate her entire NT$10,000 government handout to the Changhua Family Support Center.
The donor, identified as Lin Chiao-chen, said she made the decision because the center once provided crucial assistance to her family during their most difficult years. After escaping an abusive marriage and raising her two children alone, Lin said the support she received ensured her children could continue their education and grow up in a stable environment.
A Past Marked by Hardship and Strength
Lin shared that she had suffered from polio as a child and later worked in recycling alongside her former husband. However, her home life was marred by repeated domestic violence. She recalled that whenever her husband drank, he became aggressive—throwing objects, lashing out physically, and terrifying the children.
During those times, Lin would hurriedly gather her belongings, usher her children out of the house, and flee to her parents’ home nearby. She rode her electric scooter while the children walked behind her. At dawn the next morning, she would return briefly to collect their school bags before sending them off to school as if it were any ordinary day.
Witnessing her injuries and emotional distress, Lin’s family eventually encouraged her to seek a divorce, helping her finally break free from years of abuse. Though she gained safety, she faced the challenge of raising two children on her modest township office salary.
Support That Made a Difference
Lin credits the Child Welfare League Foundation and related support groups for helping her children stay in school and enjoy a normal childhood. She recalled that the foundation organized family outings, giving her and her children rare moments of joy during a difficult period.
“Those were the happiest times,” Lin said, expressing gratitude for every bit of help that allowed her family to move forward.
Giving Back After Surviving Hardship
Now a grandmother, Lin says her life has stabilized. Her children are grown, employed, and independent, and she remains grateful to Hsiu-shui Township Mayor Lin Ying-chia for looking after long-serving staff members. Feeling that she already has “more than enough,” she chose to give away the NT$10,000 handout as soon as she received it.
Her wish is simple: that the money helps children facing the same struggles hers once did, giving them a chance to grow up with safety, dignity, and hope.
“I finally have the ability to give back,” Lin said. “If this NT$10,000 can help even one child at the Family Support Center grow up well, then it’s worth it.”
