TAIPEI, Taiwan — April 27, 2026 — A public disturbance involving a local woman and a foreign tourist caused alarm at the underground shopping area near Taipei Main Station on Sunday afternoon, April 26.
The incident took place around 2:42 p.m. near the Y4 exit of the station’s underground mall, particularly in a section known for Southeast Asian shops. According to police, the situation had already subsided by the time officers arrived at the scene.
Initial investigation revealed that the conflict began when a foreign tourist was paying for items at a store and had briefly placed cash on the counter. A woman suddenly approached and asked to borrow money. Before receiving any response, she allegedly attempted to take the cash, prompting the tourist to stop her. This led to a heated verbal confrontation.
The situation quickly escalated as the woman reportedly became aggressive—shouting at the tourist and nearby individuals, pushing bystanders, and throwing a water bottle. Two passersby intervened to restrain her and alerted authorities, but were also shoved during the incident.
Police later escorted the woman to the station for further investigation. The foreign tourist and the two individuals who intervened declined to press charges.
Authorities disclosed that the woman has a prior record related to fraud. She is now being investigated for offenses including coercion and disturbance. The Taipei City Police Department stated that patrols around the busy transport hub will be intensified to prevent similar incidents.
The case has once again highlighted concerns about public safety in crowded commercial and transit areas in Taiwan.
