A tragic accident involving a migrant worker has raised renewed concerns over illegal employment practices in central Taiwan.
Fatal Farm Vehicle Accident in Nantou
A 50-year-old Indonesian male migrant worker lost his life after a farm vehicle accident in Puli Township, Nantou County on April 11. According to local authorities, the victim was driving an agricultural pesticide spraying մեքեն along a downhill industrial road near Beicun Road when the incident occurred.
Initial police investigation suggests that the worker may have lost control of the vehicle, causing it to collide with a roadside retaining mound. The impact led to the մեքեն overturning, pinning the driver underneath. Emergency responders arrived at the scene but found the victim with no signs of life. He was declared dead on arrival.
Worker Found to Be Undocumented
Further investigation revealed that the deceased had entered Taiwan under a tourist visa and had overstayed, making him an undocumented or illegal migrant worker. Authorities have since coordinated with Indonesian representatives in Taiwan to assist in notifying the victim’s family and arranging necessary post-incident procedures.
Employer Faces Heavy Penalty
The Nantou County Government’s Social and Labor Affairs Department stated that the employer will face penalties for violating labor laws. Under Taiwan’s Employment Service Act, hiring undocumented foreign workers is strictly prohibited. The employer could be fined no less than NT$150,000 for the violation.
Additionally, officials clarified that no death compensation or condolence payment will be granted in this case due to the worker’s illegal status.
Public Urged to Follow Legal Hiring Channels
Authorities emphasized the importance of hiring migrant workers through legal channels. They warned that employing undocumented workers not only results in financial penalties but may also expose employers to further civil and criminal liabilities, especially in cases of workplace accidents.
The incident highlights ongoing issues surrounding illegal labor practices and the risks faced by undocumented workers, particularly in hazardous jobs such as agriculture.
