Taipei, Taiwan – April 26, 2026 — A 31-year-old man surnamed Lin was arrested after allegedly attempting to rob a bank in Taipei’s Da’an District using a toy gun, in a case that has shocked the local community.

According to the Taipei City Police Department Da’an Precinct, Lin entered a branch of CTBC Bank in the afternoon carrying a suitcase and a replica firearm, demanding cash. Officers responded quickly and subdued him at the scene before taking him into custody.

Investigators revealed that Lin is a married father of two and was once a national poker tournament champion. However, his life reportedly took a downturn after a failed restaurant business left him with debts of around NT$7 million.

Although his wife helped repay most of the debt over time, financial pressure continued due to rent and family expenses following the birth of their second child. Authorities said Lin later attempted to operate an illegal mahjong gambling setup, which was previously raided and shut down by police.

Police reported that Lin acted alone and had no prior reconnaissance of the bank. Surveillance footage showed him walking from his residence carrying a 28-inch suitcase, pausing briefly outside the bank before entering. Investigators described the attempted robbery as poorly planned and impulsive, with no getaway plan or accomplices involved.

During questioning, Lin told police the act was driven by sudden emotional stress and financial desperation, claiming he simply “wanted to try his luck.” He also requested to see his young children during the investigation. Police later arranged a controlled visit while executing a search of his residence.

Following interrogation, Lin was transferred to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office. Prosecutors applied for detention without visitation rights, citing charges of aggravated robbery, and the court approved the request.

Authorities continue to investigate the case while emphasizing the serious legal consequences of violent financial crimes, regardless of motive.
