Pingtung, Taiwan – April 26, 2026 — Authorities in Pingtung County have announced a major enforcement campaign targeting drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians at intersections, with stricter inspections set to begin tomorrow.
The Pingtung County Police Bureau confirmed that the special enforcement operation will focus on high-accident zones and busy intersections where pedestrian traffic is heavy. Drivers who fail to properly stop for pedestrians will face fines ranging from NT$1,200 to NT$6,000.
Police statistics show that in 2025 alone, the county recorded 122 pedestrian-related traffic accidents, resulting in 114 injuries and fatalities. While this marks a slight decrease compared to the previous year, officials stressed that the risk to pedestrians remains significant.
Authorities warned that even a momentary failure to yield can lead to serious consequences, including pedestrians being struck, dragged into traffic, or secondary collisions. Elderly individuals, school children, and slower-moving pedestrians are considered especially vulnerable.
Under Taiwan’s traffic regulations, drivers approaching crosswalks or intersections where pedestrians are crossing must come to a complete stop and allow them to pass safely. Failure to do so may result not only in fines but also in penalty points and mandatory road safety education.
If a violation leads to injury, penalties increase significantly, including fines up to NT$36,000 and license suspension for up to two years. In cases involving serious injury or death, drivers may face even heavier fines and permanent revocation of their driving license.
Pingtung Police Chief Gan Yan-min urged drivers to slow down and fully yield when approaching pedestrian crossings, emphasizing that road safety requires cooperation from both drivers and pedestrians. He also reminded pedestrians to follow traffic signals and use designated crossings to ensure their own safety.
The police bureau said it will continue combining strict enforcement with public education to improve road safety and protect residents across Pingtung.
