Kaohsiung, Taiwan – April 20, 2026

A tense situation unfolded late Monday evening aboard a train of the Kaohsiung MRT after a 71-year-old man allegedly threatened another passenger with a folding knife, alarming commuters inside the carriage.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 9:10 PM while the train was in transit. The suspect, identified only by his surname Wang, became irritated by what he described as excessive noise from another passenger. The disagreement quickly escalated into a heated argument, during which Wang allegedly pulled out a folding knife, causing panic among nearby riders.

Authorities said Wang had boarded the train at Gangshan Station and was on his way home. The confrontation began as the train approached Aozihdi Station, where tensions between the two individuals intensified.

Although Wang later admitted his actions were inappropriate and issued an apology—accepted by the other passenger—the situation had already frightened others on board. Witnesses promptly alerted station personnel and contacted the police.

Wang eventually got off at Houyi Station, where officers intercepted him before he could leave the area. The case has been referred to local police for further investigation, with authorities considering potential charges related to public intimidation.

Officials continue to review the incident as part of an ongoing inquiry to clarify the full circumstances and determine appropriate legal action.
