Keelung, Taiwan – April 20, 2026

A man in Keelung has been sentenced to 30 days of detention after assaulting a female convenience store clerk during a dispute last year, according to a recent ruling by the Keelung District Court.

Court findings revealed that the suspect, identified by his surname Wu, got into an argument with the clerk at a convenience store along Liou Ming Chuan Road in the early hours of June 26, 2025. The two were previously unknown to each other.

Investigations showed that the altercation began over a minor issue, but Wu allegedly lost control of his emotions and physically attacked the clerk. The victim sustained multiple injuries, including bruises and abrasions to her scalp, neck, and right hand. She immediately reported the incident to authorities.

During the investigation, the victim also claimed she was verbally abused and inappropriately touched amid the chaos. However, prosecutors found insufficient evidence to support charges of defamation or sexual harassment. While Wu admitted to using offensive language, authorities considered it an emotional outburst rather than a deliberate attempt to harm the victim’s reputation. Surveillance footage also did not confirm the alleged inappropriate contact.

Wu, on the other hand, argued that he acted in self-defense, claiming the clerk struck him first. However, video evidence contradicted his statement and showed that he initiated the physical confrontation, leading prosecutors to formally charge him with causing injury.

In its ruling, the court emphasized that Wu resorted to violence instead of resolving the conflict peacefully, resulting in harm to another person. It also noted that he had not reached any settlement or provided compensation to the victim.

Taking into account that Wu has no prior criminal record, is currently unemployed, and has a history of mental health issues, along with the relatively minor nature of the victim’s injuries, the court handed down a 30-day detention sentence. The penalty may be converted into a fine of NT$30,000.
