Zhongpu Catholic Church Reopens After Typhoon Damage, Marks 64th Year with Historic Procession ⛪🌧️
Chiayi County, Taiwan — April 11, 2026 — After suffering severe damage from a typhoon last year, a parish in Chiayi County has officially reopened its church following months of restoration, celebrating the milestone with a historic religious procession.
The Zhongpu Catholic Church was heavily impacted by Typhoon Danas in July 2025, which destroyed the roofs of both the main church building and the priest’s residence. During the aftermath, parishioners were forced to gather under temporary shelters to attend Sunday Mass.
Through the combined efforts of the diocese, parish priest Father Ding Sheng-hua, and parish leader Zhong Jia-shun, the church underwent a successful reconstruction.
⛪ Historic Religious Celebration
To mark the completion of repairs, the church held a special procession featuring statues of Jesus as King and the Blessed Virgin Mary. The event is considered the first large-scale outdoor religious procession in the church’s 64-year history, drawing parishioners and visitors from across the region.
🌄 A Church with Deep Community Roots
Zhongpu Catholic Church has long played a vital role in the community. More than six decades ago, the area faced serious water shortages due to its elevated terrain. A missionary priest helped secure international aid, leading to the construction of a basic water system in 1963, as well as roads and a bridge that improved access and safety for local residents.
In recent years, under the leadership of Father Ding and local parish organizers, the church has expanded its outreach programs, offering Bible study sessions, children’s religious education, and community wellness activities.
🙏 Thanksgiving Mass and Recognition
The reopening celebration included a thanksgiving Mass led by Bishop Pu Ying-xiong of the Diocese of Chiayi. Representatives from churches across the Yunlin and Chiayi regions attended, along with local officials and community members.
During the event, appreciation certificates were awarded to You Shu-zhen, the village chief, for her support in the church’s recovery. Additional recognitions were given to key parish members, including Father Ding, Zhong Jia-shun, and several volunteers, for their dedication to rebuilding and strengthening the church community.
🌟 A Symbol of Faith and Resilience
The reopening of Zhongpu Catholic Church stands as a testament to faith, unity, and resilience. From disaster recovery to renewed community engagement, the parish continues to serve as a cornerstone for both spiritual life and local development.
