Yushan, Taiwan — February 2, 2026

A strong continental cold air mass brought abundant moisture to the mountainous areas of Nantou and Chiayi, resulting in rare snowfall at Yushan North Peak and transforming the high-altitude landscape into a stunning silvery-white world.

According to observations from the Yushan North Peak Weather Station, temperatures dropped close to freezing yesterday afternoon. At around 5:20 p.m. on February 1, snow began falling at the station, located at an elevation of 3,844 meters. While the initial snowfall was intermittent and did not immediately lead to visible accumulation, conditions intensified overnight.

Snow fell again early this morning at 6:00 a.m., lasting for approximately 40 minutes. Shortly after, at 7:10 a.m., a second round of snowfall occurred, bringing the total snow accumulation to about 1 centimeter in the area.

The two rounds of snowfall coated the ground surrounding the weather station, as well as rooftops, solar panels, outdoor meteorological instruments, and nearby vegetation. Trees and shrubs appeared dusted with powdered sugar, creating a picturesque and dreamlike winter scene across the North Peak.

The Yushan National Park Headquarters reminded the public that temperatures in high-altitude areas remain extremely low, with icy and slippery road conditions likely. Hikers and mountaineers are strongly advised to carry essential winter mountaineering equipment, including ice axes, crampons, and helmets, and to be well-trained in their use before entering snowy terrain to ensure safety.
