Kaohsiung City, Taiwan (October 19, 2025)— A tragic road accident claimed the life of a 48-year-old woman early Saturday morning, October 19, in Gushan District, Kaohsiung. The victim, identified only by her surname Zhou, was struck by a taxi while crossing the pedestrian lane at the intersection of Nanping Road and Mingcheng Road.
According to the Gushan Police Branch, the accident occurred around 1:00 a.m. when a 35-year-old driver surnamed Xie was driving a commercial taxi eastbound along Mingcheng 3rd Road. Police reports indicate that Zhou was crossing from north to south on Nanping Road when she allegedly ignored a red light, resulting in the fatal collision.
Emergency responders found Zhou in a state of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and immediately rushed her to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Authorities confirmed that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. The Kaohsiung Traffic Brigade is currently conducting a detailed investigation to determine the precise cause and sequence of events that led to the accident.
Mr. Xie has since been referred to the Kaohsiung District Prosecutor’s Office for investigation on charges of negligent homicide (manslaughter).
The Gushan Police Branch reminded all motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution at intersections, obey traffic signals, and stay alert to their surroundings to prevent similar tragedies.
