Changhua County, Taiwan — January 3, 2026

A horrifying traffic accident occurred on the afternoon of January 2 in Puyan Township, Changhua County, leaving a woman seriously injured and her pet dog dead at the scene.

The incident took place along Section 1 of Zhangshui Road, where a 44-year-old woman surnamed Chen had just finished eating at a self-service restaurant. After her meal, Chen squatted near the shop entrance to play with her dog when she was suddenly struck by a sport utility vehicle that had just begun moving from behind. Both the woman and her dog were pulled beneath the vehicle, resulting in tragic consequences.

Surveillance footage reviewed by authorities shows Chen focused on her pet and unaware of the approaching vehicle. The SUV, driven by a 40-year-old man surnamed Shen, moved forward slowly, with its right front wheel running over Chen and her dog in a disturbing scene. The dog died instantly, while Chen suffered life-threatening injuries.

Nearby residents rushed to assist after discovering Chen trapped beneath the vehicle and unconscious. A forklift was quickly brought in to lift the SUV, allowing rescuers to pull her free.

Emergency responders from the Puyan Fire Brigade arrived shortly after receiving the report. Chen was found to have a suspected fracture in her left lower leg along with multiple abrasions. Paramedics immediately stabilized her condition, administered oxygen, and rushed her to Changhua Hospital under the Ministry of Health and Welfare for emergency treatment.

Hospital officials later confirmed that Chen sustained multiple serious injuries, including pneumothorax (collapsed lung), fractures to her pelvis, and several broken ribs. She remains in the intensive care unit, where doctors continue to closely monitor her condition.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident to determine liability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
