Taipei — A viral video circulating online since September 30 has sparked public debate after showing a white-haired elderly woman being kicked and forced off a Taipei Metro train during a heated altercation over a priority seat.

Authorities confirmed that the woman, identified only by her surname Zeng, was later arrested in a separate theft case. The Taipei Metro Police said they have reviewed station surveillance footage and passenger records related to the MRT incident, and the case will be forwarded to the proper authorities under the Social Order Maintenance Act.

Altercation on Tamsui-Bound Train

The confrontation reportedly took place at around 4 p.m. on September 29 aboard a Tamsui-bound train at Xinyi Anhe Station. According to police, Zeng requested that a young passenger vacate a priority seat, but the request escalated into a quarrel. The passenger allegedly struck her knee with a bag and kicked her, as captured in the widely shared video.

Police clarified that no official complaint was filed at the time but confirmed they are working to identify the individuals involved by cross-checking video evidence and ticketing data. Both parties may be summoned to provide their statements.

Separate Arrest for Theft

On the same day, Zeng was apprehended by the Datong Police Branch in connection with a theft case. She was later turned over to prosecutors at the Shilin District Prosecutor’s Office. The MRT-related incident, classified as a possible violation of the Social Order Maintenance Act, was transferred to the appropriate local police unit for further action.

Priority Seat Rules and Public Reminder

Police reminded the public that priority seating on MRT trains is protected by law, particularly under provisions for persons with disabilities and those with physical conditions requiring accommodation. Passengers experiencing disputes inside trains are advised to use the emergency intercom system or dial 110 for immediate police assistance to prevent similar confrontations.
