October 20, 2025 – Pingtung City, Taiwan
A man surnamed Zhang has been sentenced to one year in prison after being found guilty of manslaughter in connection with a fatal motorcycle accident in Pingtung City. The Pingtung District Court delivered the verdict following an investigation that found Zhang was driving without a license and at more than twice the legal speed limit at the time of the crash.
According to court records, the incident occurred in November last year along the Fuxing South section of Pingtung City, where the maximum speed limit is 40 kilometers per hour. Zhang was reportedly driving between 82.85 and 90.33 kilometers per hour when he attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with a female motorcyclist surnamed Sun, who was traveling in the same direction.
The collision caused Ms. Sun to lose control of her motorcycle, resulting in a violent fall. She sustained multiple fractures and a cerebral hemorrhage. Despite being rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, she later died from her injuries.
The court ruled that Zhang’s reckless behavior — driving without a valid license and severely exceeding the speed limit — was the direct cause of the fatal accident. The presiding judge emphasized that such violations pose a serious risk to public safety.
Zhang was sentenced to one year in prison for the crime of manslaughter. However, the decision remains subject to appeal.
Authorities reiterated their reminder to motorists that unlicensed driving and speeding are among the leading causes of traffic fatalities in Taiwan, urging all drivers to strictly comply with traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
