October 7, 2025 – Taipei, Taiwan

Taiwan is bracing for changing weather conditions this week as Typhoon Halong—also referred to locally as Harun—makes a major turn in its path. Although the storm is not expected to directly hit Taiwan, its outer circulation will carry abundant moisture, triggering widespread rainfall across several regions, particularly in the north and east.

According to the Central Weather Administration (CWA), the northeasterly wind system will strengthen starting Tuesday (October 7), bringing local short-term showers to Keelung’s northern coast, northeastern Taiwan, the mountainous areas of Greater Taipei, and the Hengchun Peninsula. The eastern and southeastern regions will also experience intermittent rain, while the central and southern parts of the island may see isolated afternoon thunderstorms.

Typhoon Halong Strengthens, Turns Toward Japan

Meteorological expert Wu Derong reported that based on the latest European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model released on October 5, Typhoon Halong has shifted its course northeastward toward the waters south of Japan. The system is expected to intensify into a powerful typhoon, but will not pose a direct threat to Taiwan.

However, the typhoon’s outer circulation is expected to bring significant moisture to six counties and cities—Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung—resulting in heavier rainfall from Wednesday (October 8) through Friday (October 10).

Rain Expected to Continue Through National Day Holiday

The CWA forecasts that the National Day weekend (October 11–12) will still see intermittent showers, particularly in Keelung’s northern coast, the eastern half of Taiwan, the mountainous areas of Greater Taipei, and the Hengchun Peninsula. Other regions are expected to be partly cloudy to sunny, though localized thunderstorms may develop in central and southern Taiwan during the afternoon hours.

Authorities urge the public to stay updated on weather advisories, especially those planning outdoor or travel activities during the long weekend.
