Taipei, Taiwan — January 11, 2026. The continental cold air mass affecting Taiwan has started to weaken, bringing a temporary break from the recent chilly weather. Meanwhile, a developing tropical system over the southern waters is drawing attention. A tropical disturbance identified as “91W” has formed southeast of the Philippines and may strengthen in the coming days, potentially becoming the first typhoon of the year.
According to the weather platform “Taiwan Typhoon Forum | Weather Express,” disturbance 91W is expected to intensify into a tropical depression soon. Meteorologists note that there is a reasonable chance for the system to develop into the season’s first named tropical storm. If it reaches typhoon status, it will be named “Nokaen,” meaning “swallow.”
Forecast models currently suggest that 91W will move closer to the eastern side of the Philippines before gradually turning northeast. Based on current projections, the likelihood of the system directly impacting Taiwan is low.
However, weather experts caution that 91W may still influence Taiwan indirectly. As the system evolves, it could bring increased moisture to accompany the next surge of cold air, potentially leading to wetter conditions in northern Taiwan. The public is advised to enjoy the dry, pleasant weather this week before conditions may shift once again.
