HSINCHU CITY — November 29, 2025 — A violent knife attack in the Chenghuang Temple commercial district left a 17-year-old part-time student seriously injured, authorities reported. The victim, identified by the surname Sun, suffered severe wounds, including exposed organs, but was rushed to the hospital and is now in stable condition.
Suspects Detained and Released on Bail
The Hsinchu District Prosecutors Office has taken action against two suspects, surnamed Chen and Lin. Chen, the primary suspect, has been detained with restricted visitation rights, while Lin, an active-duty military personnel, was released on bail of NT$30,000 and is under a restricted residence order. Police have informed military authorities as per protocol when active-duty personnel are involved in criminal cases.
Investigation Reveals Debt Dispute
Police investigations indicate that the attack stemmed from a debt dispute of approximately NT$10,000. Chen allegedly confronted Sun to collect the debt and arrived at the City God Temple with his younger brother and six friends in three vehicles. During the encounter, a confrontation escalated into a violent attack.
Sun was reportedly assaulted with bare hands by several individuals, including Chen, Lin, and Chen’s brother. Chen also used a pre-hidden machete, inflicting multiple serious injuries. Following the attack, the group fled the scene in their vehicles.
Scene Sparks Public Alarm
The incident, which took place in the bustling commercial area of Hsinchu City, left the snack shop covered in blood and frightened many bystanders. Authorities emphasized the severity of the attack, which involved both assault and use of a weapon, and highlighted the potential danger posed to minors and the public.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
Police apprehended the suspects within four hours and handed them over to the Hsinchu District Court. Prosecutors charged Chen and Lin with multiple offenses, including assaulting a minor, group assault, carrying a weapon, and attempted murder. Both were deemed a flight and evidence destruction risk, prompting prosecutors to request detention with restricted visitation.
Ultimately, the court granted detention for Chen, while Lin was released on bail with restrictions. Authorities continue to investigate the case to ensure justice is served.
