A 40-year-old motorcyclist surnamed Lai was arrested after attempting to flee from police while driving under the influence of alcohol and carrying illegal drugs in Taoyuan City on Friday evening.
According to police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. along Minsheng Road in Taoyuan District. Officers initially approached Lai for a routine traffic violation after he failed to use his turn signal. However, instead of complying, the suspect accelerated and attempted to evade authorities.
A coordinated pursuit operation was immediately launched. During the chase, Lai drove recklessly through several major roads, including Zhongzheng Road, Sanmin Road, and Yong’an Road, as well as narrow alleys in the old district. Authorities noted multiple dangerous violations, such as driving against traffic, swerving, and running red lights.
The pursuit came to an end along Heping Road, where officers had established a roadblock. Lai attempted to continue his escape by driving against traffic but collided with a police motorcycle and fell to the ground. He was promptly subdued and taken into custody.
A search conducted at the scene resulted in the seizure of suspected illegal substances, including etomidate and amphetamines. Further testing revealed that Lai had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.23 mg/L, while a rapid saliva drug test returned a positive result.
The suspect now faces charges related to violations of drug control and public safety laws. In addition, authorities reported that fines for multiple traffic violations committed during the incident have exceeded NT$190,000.
The case has been referred to prosecutors for further investigation and legal proceedings.
