Taoyuan City, Taiwan — October 21, 2025
Taoyuan City is set to expand its eco-friendly public transportation system with the addition of 136 new electric buses by the end of this year, furthering its goal of creating a greener and more sustainable urban transit network. However, as the number of electric buses increases, vehicle safety and fire response preparedness have become key priorities for local authorities.
To strengthen emergency response capabilities, the Taoyuan City Transportation Bureau, in coordination with the Fire Department, Police Department, and Taoyuan Bus Company, conducted an electric bus emergency response drill this afternoon on Fuji 2nd Street in Taoyuan District. The exercise aimed to test coordination between agencies and improve the efficiency of handling electric vehicle (EV) fire incidents through simulated real-life scenarios.
The Taoyuan City Public Bus Passenger Transport Association served as the general commander of the drill, with Chengyun Motors providing technical assistance. The simulation featured two main scenarios: “smoke during charging operations” and “fire while driving.”
In the charging station simulation, the bus driver performed an emergency power shutdown, used fire extinguishers according to standard safety protocols, and reported the incident to the fire department. Firefighters then sealed off the area and removed potential hazards. In the “fire while driving” scenario, participants practiced immediate vehicle stopping, passenger evacuation, fire suppression, and medical rescue procedures, while other teams handled traffic control, accident documentation, and logistical support.
Transportation Bureau Director Zhang Xinfu emphasized that as electric buses become more common, safety preparedness must advance alongside technology. “Taoyuan City continues to promote low-carbon transportation. By the end of 2026, the city will have 273 electric buses in operation, making up around 35% of the total fleet,” Zhang said. “We are committed to ensuring that both drivers and passengers feel safe through ongoing training and safety drills.”
The Transportation Bureau also highlighted that the city government will continue to enforce daily inspections, battery maintenance, and early warning systems among bus operators. Future disaster prevention drills will also be expanded to strengthen readiness across the public transportation system.
Fire Chief Gong Yongxin praised the participants’ quick and accurate response during the drill, noting that it reflected the effectiveness of their continuous training. “As vehicle technologies evolve, firefighting and rescue techniques must evolve as well,” Gong stated. “We will continue to hold such drills to improve emergency response systems and safeguard the public.”
Taoyuan City’s proactive approach demonstrates its dual commitment to environmental sustainability and public safety, ensuring that its growing fleet of electric buses remains both eco-friendly and secure for commuters.
