Three Cold Air Masses to Hit Taiwan in the Coming Week

TAIPEI, Taiwan — January 10, 2026

Taiwan is preparing for a sequence of cold fronts expected to sweep across the island over the next week, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). The first surge of cold air is set to arrive tonight, bringing sharp temperature drops to western Taiwan, where lows may fall to around 11°C, with some localized areas dipping even lower.

A brief period of warmer weather is expected on Monday (Dec. 12). However, two additional surges—one on Tuesday and another on Saturday—will once again strengthen northeasterly winds, resulting in cooler conditions and increased moisture.

First Cold Surge Arrives Tonight

CWA forecaster Chang Cheng-chuan stated that the incoming continental cold air mass will bring scattered short-lived showers to eastern and southeastern Taiwan beginning tonight. Keelung’s north coast, the northeast, and the Hengchun Peninsula are also expected to see isolated rain.

Forecasted temperatures include:

  • Western Taiwan & Northeast: 11°C to 14°C

  • Localized areas: below 10°C

  • Daytime highs:

    • North & Northeast: 15°C to 17°C

    • Hualien & Taitung: 18°C to 19°C

    • Central & South: 21°C to 23°C

Monday Warm-Up Before Another Cold Surge

Chang noted that conditions will gradually warm up during the day on Monday, providing a brief window of more comfortable weather.

However, this respite will be short-lived, as a stronger northeasterly wind system is forecast to arrive on Tuesday, bringing cooler temperatures once again. Eastern and southeastern regions, including the Hengchun Peninsula, may see scattered short showers, while western Taiwan will experience significant temperature differences between day and night.

Stable Weather Thursday and Friday

On Thursday and Friday (Dec. 15–16), the northeasterly winds are expected to weaken. These two days should see mostly cloudy to sunny skies across Taiwan, with only eastern Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula experiencing occasional light rain.

Third Cold Surge Arriving Saturday

A third wave of northeasterly winds is expected on Saturday (Dec. 17). This system will cool conditions in northern and northeastern Taiwan, while central and southern regions will continue to see wide temperature variations. Keelung’s north coast, Taipei’s mountain areas, eastern Taiwan, and the Hengchun Peninsula are likely to see scattered short showers.
