Taipei, Taiwan — January 11, 2026

A strong continental cold air mass continues to bring significantly lower temperatures across Taiwan, with some areas experiencing conditions below 10°C. According to data released by the National Fire Agency (NFA), a total of 225 non-traumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) cases were reported between Sunday, January 4, and Saturday, January 10.

Authorities warn that cold weather can trigger cardiovascular complications, especially among the elderly and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. The NFA urged the public to stay warm, monitor the well-being of senior family members, and seek medical assistance immediately if any unusual symptoms arise.

Rising OHCA cases during cold spell

The reported OHCA cases for the week were as follows:

  • January 4 — 23 cases

  • January 5 — 35 cases

  • January 6 — 26 cases

  • January 7 — 34 cases

  • January 8 — 40 cases

  • January 9 — 32 cases

  • January 10 — 35 cases

While the number of incidents increased during the cold wave, officials emphasized that there is no confirmed evidence directly linking the temperature drop to the surge in OHCA cases. Further analysis would be needed to establish a direct correlation.

NFA issues hot spring safety guidelines

The National Fire Agency also reminded the public to be cautious when visiting hot springs to warm up. Individuals with heart conditions or chronic illnesses should first consult a doctor before soaking in hot baths. The agency highlighted six safety precautions:

  1. Avoid hot baths immediately after eating or drinking.
Alcohol and spicy foods can raise heart rate and increase cardiac strain; wait at least 1.5 to 2 hours.

  2. Do not go alone.
Having companions ensures timely assistance in case of emergencies.

  3. Stay hydrated.
Prolonged exposure to hot water may cause dehydration.

  4. Maintain proper water temperature.
The water should not exceed 40°C, and sudden shifts between hot and cold water should be avoided.

  5. Limit soak time.
Each session should not exceed 15 minutes without breaks.

  6. Stand up slowly after soaking.
Rapid movement may cause dizziness or fainting.

Authorities will continue monitoring medical and emergency response data as cold weather persists throughout the region.
