CAPAS, TARLAC — A simple yet touching act of generosity warmed hearts during the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk 2025 in Tarlac on October 4, when a local taho vendor chose to celebrate his birthday by giving away his product for free.
Photographer Fritz dela Cruz, one of the event participants, shared the story of his encounter with “Tatay Ruben,” a beloved taho vendor along F. Tañedo Street. According to dela Cruz, the elderly vendor was joyfully handing out cups of taho to anyone passing by, explaining that it was his birthday — a day he marks each year by sharing his blessings with others.
When asked why he continues the tradition despite not having much, Tatay Ruben replied, “Kahit mahirap lang ako, ang importante napapasaya natin ang mga tao kahit sa simpleng bagay.” (Even though I don’t have much, what’s important is that I can make people happy, even in small ways.)
Dela Cruz later reflected on the encounter in his social media post, writing, “Even though he is not rich, Tatay Taho showed that kindness of heart matters more than wealth. Through his simple gesture, he reminded us that true celebration is not about what we receive, but about what we are willing to share.”
For at least three years now, Tatay Ruben has continued this heartfelt birthday tradition — a small yet powerful reminder that joy multiplies when shared. His story has since inspired many online, proving that generosity knows no financial bounds.
