Manila, Philippines — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) received strong backing from senators during the deliberations for its proposed 2026 budget, with lawmakers praising the agency’s wide-ranging programs that protect and empower Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families.

During the budget discussions, senators highlighted the agency’s effective use of the AKSYON Fund, which provides medical, legal, and humanitarian assistance to distressed OFWs. They also commended the DMW’s reintegration initiatives, including training, retooling, and upskilling programs aimed at helping returning OFWs transition into new livelihoods. The rollout of DMW Help Desks across local government units nationwide was likewise recognized as a major step toward improving accessibility of services for migrant workers.

Senators Cite Key Improvements in DMW Services

Senators Joel Villanueva, Bong Go, and JV Ejercito noted several advancements in the DMW’s operations. Among these were:

  • Improved service delivery at the OFW Hospital

  • Expansion of Migrant Workers Resource Centers

  • Integration of the OFW Travel Pass into the eGovPH system, benefiting more than 300,000 users

Lawmakers also emphasized the need for stronger inter-agency coordination with the DSWD, PNP, NBI, DOJ, and other law enforcement bodies to intensify the fight against illegal recruitment and human trafficking.

In addition, senators highlighted the DMW’s ongoing collaborations with SSS, Pag-IBIG Fund, and PhilHealth, which help guarantee OFWs’ access to pensions, housing opportunities, and healthcare services.

Call for Enhanced Reintegration and Policy Development

Senators Risa Hontiveros and Allan Peter Cayetano urged the DMW to further strengthen its reintegration programs by improving monitoring and evaluation systems, spotlighting successful OFW entrepreneurs, and expanding research-driven migration policies. They encouraged deeper collaboration with the CHED, TESDA, MARINA, and other partner institutions to ensure that programs remain effective and responsive to the needs of modern-day migrant workers.

Government Reaffirms Commitment to OFWs

The strong legislative support for the DMW budget reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding and empowering OFWs—hailed as the Bagong Bayani ng Mundo. Their contributions, including nearly ₱30 billion in annual remittances, continue to play a vital role in sustaining and strengthening the Philippine economy.

As the 2026 budget moves forward, the DMW vows to further enhance programs and services that uphold the welfare, dignity, and rights of Filipino migrant workers worldwide.
