A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a stabbing incident left another man injured on Xinhai Road in Banqiao District on Tuesday evening, police said.
Authorities reported that the incident occurred at around 7:32 p.m. near the entrance of Lane 109 on Xinhai Road. Police patrol units responded to an emergency call and arrived at the scene to find a man, surnamed Chen, lying injured at the roadside. Officers immediately subdued and arrested the suspect, a man surnamed Hsi, who was still in possession of a folding knife believed to have been used in the attack.
According to preliminary police findings, the two men accidentally bumped into each other while walking near the alleyway, which led to a verbal dispute. Investigators said Hsi, who was reportedly intoxicated at the time, became upset after Chen did not apologize. He then allegedly pulled out a folding knife and stabbed Chen in the abdomen.
Emergency medical personnel said the victim remained conscious throughout the incident and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Medical examinations later confirmed that the stab wound was approximately one centimeter deep and did not damage any internal organs. Chen’s condition was described as stable, and his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Police seized the folding knife at the scene as evidence. The suspect, who is currently unemployed, was taken into custody and is being investigated on charges of attempted murder. Authorities said the motive behind the attack is still under investigation, and the case has been referred to the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office for further legal proceedings.
Police reminded the public to exercise self-control and avoid confrontations, particularly when alcohol is involved, warning that minor disputes can quickly escalate into serious criminal offenses.
