HUALIEN COUNTY, Taiwan — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Ji’an Township, Hualien County, at 7:52 a.m. on Tuesday, October 8, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
The quake, which had a shallow depth of 6.1 kilometers, was centered approximately 6.9 kilometers west of the Hualien County Government office. The tremor was classified as perceptible and caused noticeable shaking across several regions in Taiwan.
The CWA reported that the maximum intensity recorded was level 4 in Hualien City. The quake registered level 3 in Nantou County; level 2 in Taichung City, Yilan County, and Yunlin County; and level 1 in several other areas, including Taitung County, Taoyuan City, Chiayi County, Hsinchu County, Changhua County, Miaoli County, Chiayi City, New Taipei City, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries following the tremor, but authorities reminded residents to remain vigilant, as aftershocks may occur.
