A 53-year-old man surnamed Huang lost control of his van early this morning and crashed into a Hi-Life convenience store in Luzhou District, New Taipei City. The accident occurred as Huang was driving his elderly parents and sister to the Shilin vegetable market to do business.

According to police, the driver claimed he had taken cold medicine before driving and became drowsy, causing him to fall asleep at the wheel.

Surveillance footage from the area showed the crash happening at around 7:17 a.m. The van was seen traveling straight along Heping Road, approaching the intersection with Zhongshan Road. Instead of turning left, it suddenly accelerated, veered onto the sidewalk, and crashed directly into the Hi-Life convenience store.

Before hitting the storefront, the vehicle plowed through several metal posts at a Ubike rental station, bounced, and then smashed through the store’s glass doors, reaching the cashier counter.


🧑‍⚕️ One Injured, No Bystanders Harmed

Fortunately, there were no pedestrians or customers in front of the store or near the cashier at the time of the crash. The impact, however, caused broken glass and scattered merchandise throughout the entrance area.

Huang’s 82-year-old father suffered a head injury and was immediately transported by ambulance to Sanchong Hospital for treatment. His 79-year-old mother and 53-year-old sister sustained minor abrasions but declined further medical attention.

Responding officers from the Luzhou Precinct confirmed that Huang was not under the influence of alcohol, as his blood alcohol test registered 0. The van was later towed away to clear the area, and traffic investigators documented the scene for official reporting.

Authorities stated that the incident will be handled as a traffic accident, with the exact cause still under investigation.
