October 30, 2025 — Miaoli, Taiwan

A Filipino migrant worker identified as Ah Jin has been sentenced to 10 days of detention by the Miaoli District Court after being found guilty of public indecency at Houlong Railway Station. The incident, which occurred early morning on August 26 last year, caused alarm among commuters and drew attention to issues of public safety at train stations.

According to court documents, at around 5:40 a.m., Ah Jin noticed a Filipino woman sitting alone on a bench at Houlong Station while waiting for a train. Seeing that the area was quiet, he allegedly stood a short distance away and began making inappropriate gestures. Moments later, he approached the woman, pulled down his pants, and exposed his genitals.

Startled, the woman shouted at him, prompting Ah Jin to cover himself with his backpack and flee the scene. The victim immediately reported the incident to station personnel, who then alerted local police.

Authorities reviewed surveillance footage from the station, which confirmed the woman’s account. Although Ah Jin initially denied the allegations and claimed he did not understand what the woman had said, he later admitted to the act after being shown the video evidence.

Prosecutors charged Ah Jin with public indecency and requested a summary judgment. In its ruling, the Miaoli District Court stated that his actions were indecent and had caused psychological distress to the victim, while also violating public morals and order.

Considering his confession, personal background, and financial circumstances, the court imposed a 10-day detention sentence, which may be converted to a fine of NT$1,000 per day.

The case has sparked discussions in Taiwan’s migrant community about maintaining discipline and respect for local laws, as well as ensuring safety for all individuals—both local and foreign—at public places such as train stations.
