Cool and Damp Weather Follows Frost Descent as Temperatures Drop Across Taiwan

TAIPEI (October 24, 2025)— As Taiwan entered the Frost Descent (霜降), one of the 24 traditional solar terms, meteorological experts noted that autumn weather is now taking hold. The seasonal shift brings cooler conditions, especially during mornings and evenings, with northern and northeastern Taiwan expected to remain wet and chilly throughout the day.

According to weather observations, the low temperature in northern Taiwan could drop to around 21°C, marking a significant shift toward cooler autumn weather. Over the coming week, temperatures across northern Taiwan, Yilan, Kinmen, and Matsu are forecast to range between 20°C and 23°C, while other regions will also experience mild but noticeable cooling.

Lin De-en, a doctoral student in atmospheric science at National Taiwan University, shared in his Facebook page “Teacher Lin’s Weather Station” that the seasonal change has led to larger temperature differences between day and night, accompanied by a drier climate.

He noted that today, northern and northeastern regions will remain cool and damp, with temperatures ranging between 21°C and 26°C. Other parts of Taiwan will see morning lows between 22°C and 25°C, while daytime highs will reach 29°C to 32°C.

Meanwhile, the outlying islands are also feeling the seasonal shift. Penghu and Kinmen will be partly cloudy with temperatures between 23°C and 26°C, noticeably cooler than in previous weeks. Matsu will see overcast skies, with temperatures between 20°C and 22°C.

Forecast for the Coming Week

According to Lin’s forecast, over the next week:

  • Northern Taiwan, Yilan, Kinmen, and Matsu: Lows between 20–23°C

  • Southern Taiwan, Hualien–Taitung, and Penghu: Lows between 22–25°C

  • Daytime highs:

    • North & East (Hualien–Taitung): 26–31°C

    • Central & South: 30–33°C

    • Yilan & Kinmen: 24–27°C

    • Penghu: 26–28°C

    • Matsu: 21–23°C

Lin advised the public to stay warm and be cautious of temperature changes, particularly for the elderly and children, as the chill of autumn deepens following the Frost Descent.
