Lanyu Island, Taitung County — October 21, 2025

A serious industrial accident occurred at a construction site near Coconut Oil Elementary School on Lanyu Island, Taitung County, at around 4:45 p.m. today, when a male construction worker, about 40 years old, was reportedly blown over by strong winds and impaled by a steel reinforcing bar that pierced through his back and chest.

Police officers and firefighters from the Lanyu Fire Department quickly arrived at the scene and launched a rescue operation. Emergency responders used cutting equipment to safely remove the protruding rebar, provided bleeding control, and placed the injured worker on a long backboard for stabilization before transporting him to the Lanyu Health Center for immediate medical care.

Authorities said that the worker remained conscious and in stable condition during rescue and transport. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, officials at the health center have requested an air ambulance to transfer the patient to Taitung City for advanced treatment.

The Engineering Division of the Taitung County Government’s Labor and Social Affairs Department stated that it had not yet received an official incident report but confirmed that an investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the accident and whether safety regulations were properly followed at the site.

The incident highlights the risks faced by construction workers, particularly in coastal and island regions where sudden weather changes and strong winds can pose significant safety hazards.
