Taipei, Taiwan — December 17, 2025
Taiwan is expected to experience colder early-morning temperatures and increasingly unsettled weather in the days ahead, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
The CWA said that early Wednesday morning (December 17) will be notably cold due to radiational cooling, with temperatures in some inland and mountainous areas dropping to around 11°C. Significant day-to-night temperature differences are forecast, particularly in central and northern Taiwan as well as Yilan, where morning lows are expected to range from 13°C to 17°C. Eastern Taiwan will be slightly warmer, with temperatures between 18°C and 19°C.
CWA forecaster Cheng Chieh-jen said the northeast monsoon will strengthen during the day on Wednesday, bringing intermittent rain to the Keelung North Coast, Yilan, and mountainous areas of Greater Taipei. Localized heavy rainfall is possible in these regions. Scattered showers may also affect areas north of Taoyuan, eastern Taiwan, and the Hengchun Peninsula, while areas south of Hsinchu are expected to see mostly cloudy to sunny skies.
From Friday to Saturday, the northeast monsoon is forecast to weaken, allowing temperatures in northern Taiwan and Yilan to rise slightly. However, cloud systems moving north from the south are expected to bring rain across much of the island. During this period, isolated snowfall and icy conditions are possible in high-altitude areas above 3,500 meters in central and northern Taiwan, as well as in Yilan.
Another surge of the northeast monsoon is expected on Sunday and Monday next week, bringing cooler conditions back to northern Taiwan and Yilan. Short periods of rain are forecast for areas north of Taoyuan, Yilan, and the Hengchun Peninsula, while Taitung may experience isolated showers. Other regions are expected to remain mostly cloudy to sunny.
By Tuesday, cold air is forecast to ease slightly, with rain mainly affecting the Keelung North Coast, Yilan, and nearby mountainous areas. Daytime high temperatures on Wednesday are expected to reach around 24°C in northern Taiwan and Yilan, while central and southern Taiwan may see highs between 26°C and 29°C. Cooler conditions are expected to return early next week as the northeast monsoon strengthens, with mornings and evenings feeling cool across much of the island.
The CWA also warned of possible low clouds or fog in central and southern Taiwan early Thursday morning, urging motorists to exercise caution. Forecasters are monitoring another potential strengthening of the northeast monsoon late next week, which could affect weather conditions around the Christmas period, though the intensity of the cold air mass remains uncertain.
