President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has officially appointed Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla as the country’s new Ombudsman, filling the position left vacant by retired Ombudsman Samuel Martires.
Remulla’s appointment comes after weeks of speculation and public debate, as his reported interest in the post previously drew criticism from several political figures and legal experts who questioned his impartiality given his current role in the Department of Justice.
In earlier statements, Remulla maintained that his only goal is to serve the public and uphold justice, saying his intention to lead the Office of the Ombudsman stems from his desire to “do good for society.”
According to Malacañang, other names considered for the position included:
-
Michael Aguinaldo, former Commission on Audit Chairperson
-
Stephen Cruz, retired Court of Appeals Associate Justice
-
Samuel Gaerlan, Supreme Court Associate Justice
-
Michael Frederick Musngi, Sandiganbayan Associate Justice
-
Mario Lopez, retired Supreme Court Associate Justice
-
Anna Liza Logan, Deputy Executive Secretary
The Ombudsman serves as the country’s top anti-corruption official, tasked with investigating and prosecuting government officials accused of wrongdoing.
Remulla’s appointment marks a significant transition within the government’s justice system, as he leaves the DOJ to assume one of the nation’s most critical independent watchdog roles.
