October 5, 2025 | Hsinchu, Taiwan

Hsinchu SOGO is bringing the vibrant spirit of Japan’s Tokushima Awa Odori back to Taiwan this Mid-Autumn Festival, marking the return of the centuries-old traditional dance after a five-year hiatus. The event features 18 authentic Awa Odori troupes from Tokushima Prefecture, boasting a proud 400-year history, and promises an energetic celebration filled with culture, music, and family fun.

A Festive Fusion of Dance and Tradition

The highlight of the celebration will take place on October 12 at 1:30 p.m. at the main gate plaza of Hsinchu SOGO, where a 50-member troupe dressed in traditional costumes will perform to the rhythmic beats of drums and handclaps. The dynamic movements and cheerful chants will transform the plaza into a lively festival ground, creating an unforgettable holiday experience for visitors.

In addition to the performances, visitors can participate in Awa Odori dance workshops, where instructors will guide participants through the distinctive dance steps, allowing them to experience firsthand the joy and cultural charm of one of Japan’s most beloved traditional festivals.

Moonlight Market and Cultural Workshops

To complement the festive mood, Hsinchu SOGO has set up a “Moonlight Market” at the 1st floor Starlight Corridor, offering a serene yet lively atmosphere under the glow of moonlight and soft autumn breezes. The market features local cultural and creative brands, artisan crafts, designer products, and specialty foods, providing a perfect venue for a romantic evening stroll and shopping experience.

A whimsical giant moon rabbit installation adds to the festival ambiance, offering visitors the perfect photo backdrop. Shoppers can also collect check-in cards to redeem Wan Jia Xiang Korean-style marinated and grilled all-purpose sauce, blending festive fun with tasty rewards.

Indigo Dyeing Workshop and Travel Giveaway

Continuing the Tokushima cultural celebration, Hsinchu SOGO will host a “DIY Indigo Dyeing Cotton Handkerchief” workshop on October 11 (Saturday). Led by professional artisans, the event will introduce participants to traditional natural indigo dyeing techniques, using pure cotton fabric to create one-of-a-kind hand-dyed crafts.

As part of the festivities, visitors will also have a chance to win a round-trip ticket from Taipei to Shikoku, Japan (valued at NT$40,000) through a special raffle, offering lucky winners the opportunity to experience authentic Tokushima culture in person.

With its mix of traditional Japanese artistry, family-friendly workshops, and Mid-Autumn festivities, Hsinchu SOGO’s Awa Odori Celebration promises to light up the season with color, culture, and joy.
