The camp of former Ako Bicol Party-list Representative Zaldy Co has firmly denied allegations mentioned by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who earlier claimed that Co’s lawyer attempted to blackmail the government in connection with the planned cancellation of Co’s passport.
Atty. Ruy Rondain, legal counsel for Zaldy Co, rejected the President’s statements, calling the accusations “completely untrue.” Rondain clarified that he never engaged in any negotiation or communication with government officials regarding the release of videos allegedly linked to Co.
“Completely untrue. I have not spoken with anyone from the government to negotiate the stoppage of the videos for the passport. As I have always maintained, I have no control over the release of the videos,” Rondain said in response to the President’s remarks.
Administration Stands Firm
Earlier, President Marcos Jr. stated that he would not enter into any negotiation with those he described as “criminals,” insisting that the government will proceed with the cancellation of Co’s passport despite any pressure or alleged attempts at blackmail.
The President stressed that no video or threat would alter the government’s decisions, particularly in cases involving corruption allegations. Co is currently facing a warrant of arrest issued by the Sandiganbayan in connection with a multibillion-peso flood control fund scandal.
Co Camp Pushes Back
Rondain emphasized that the legal team has no involvement in any effort to influence government actions and reiterated that Co’s camp cannot control any third-party release of videos or materials.
The contrasting statements from Malacañang and Co’s lawyer highlight the growing tension surrounding the corruption allegations and ongoing legal proceedings involving the former lawmaker.
