A middle-aged man in Caotun Township, Nantou County, has drawn public attention after being caught speeding through city streets in a modified electric wheelchair. The unusual incident, which occurred yesterday (November 5), was captured on a driver’s dashcam and later circulated online, sparking both amusement and concern among netizens.
According to witnesses, the man was seen racing along Xinyi Street, heading toward Dunhe Road, maneuvering through curves at high speed. The video uploader jokingly captioned the footage, “This guy is really a spy,” as other drivers struggled to keep pace with the fast-moving wheelchair.
The video quickly went viral on social media platforms, with users commenting on the surprising speed and daring nature of the driver. Some netizens humorously suggested he should add turn signals for safety, while others expressed concern about the potential danger to pedestrians and motorists.
Police from the Caotun Precinct confirmed that they have identified the incident and are currently investigating. Authorities stated that the man’s modified wheelchair and his failure to use the sidewalk constitute violations under Articles 32-1 and 78, Paragraph 1, Item 2 of Taiwan’s Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act.
Under these provisions, using a modified electric wheelchair on public roads can result in fines ranging from NT$1,200 to NT$3,600, while not using the sidewalk can lead to an additional NT$500 fine.
