📅 Taoyuan City, Taiwan | November 5, 2025

A massive fire broke out at around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday (November 5) at a vendor stall in the Cultural Street section of Nanmen Market, located in Taoyuan District, Taoyuan City. The flames spread quickly, sending thick black smoke billowing into the air and engulfing one of the market’s busiest areas.

According to reports, the blaze devastated much of the market, with nearby streets covered in smoke. The Taoyuan City Fire Department immediately dispatched multiple fire brigades from Taoyuan and Guishan Districts to contain the fire. During the rescue operation, firefighters successfully pulled out an 83-year-old man surnamed Liu, who fortunately escaped without injury.

Authorities said the fire originated from a single-story corrugated iron structure. The operation involved 79 firefighters, 35 fire trucks, and 2 ambulances. Due to the complexity of the tightly packed stalls made of corrugated iron, firefighters initially fought the flames from outside to prevent the fire from spreading further. However, the structure’s design made it difficult to fully extinguish the smoldering fire inside.

Residents living near Nanmen Market reported that the air quality deteriorated rapidly as thick smoke and a foul odor filled the streets. Many were urged to keep their doors and windows closed to avoid inhaling the smoke. The local neighborhood chief also rushed to the scene to assist in evacuating vendors and nearby residents.

As of press time, firefighting efforts were still ongoing. Authorities temporarily closed sections of Sanmin Road and Nanhua Street for safety and advised motorists and pedestrians to take alternative routes. Officials said that Nanmen Market may have to suspend operations for the time being while safety inspections and cleanup continue.
