A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, on Friday afternoon, October 17, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The quake, which was tectonic in origin, occurred 11 kilometers north of Pagudpud at 4:14 p.m. and had a depth of 10 kilometers. PHIVOLCS explained that this type of earthquake is caused by the movement of geological faults beneath the earth’s surface.

Instrumental intensity readings showed the following:

  • Intensity III – Bacarra, Ilocos Norte

  • Intensity II – Claveria, Cagayan; San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte; Sinait, Ilocos Sur

  • Intensity I – City of Vigan, Ilocos Sur

Just minutes later, a magnitude 5.0 aftershock was also recorded in the same area at 4:31 p.m., suggesting continuing seismic activity in northern Luzon.

Although no damage has been reported, PHIVOLCS cautioned residents about the possibility of aftershocks. Locals are encouraged to remain vigilant, inspect their surroundings for any structural cracks, and follow earthquake safety protocols.

Northern Luzon lies along the Philippine Fault Zone, one of the country’s most active seismic belts. PHIVOLCS continues to monitor the region closely and will release updates should further activity occur.
