Weigong Hospital in Toufen, Miaoli County, has confirmed the tragic passing of Dr. Liu Daren, the hospital’s Director of the Department of Surgery, following a cycling accident on the Hsinchu section of the West Coast Highway (Provincial Highway 61) at noon on October 12.
According to initial reports, Dr. Liu, aged 59, was cycling south along the coastal route as part of his regular training when his bicycle collided with the rear of a van that was stopped at a red light and about to move forward on green at the Pozaitou section in Xinfeng Township, Hsinchu County. Emergency responders rushed him to the hospital, but he was later pronounced dead.
Weigong Hospital expressed profound sorrow over his passing, stating that all colleagues were “deeply shocked and heartbroken” upon learning the news. The hospital extended its deepest condolences to Dr. Liu’s family and praised his lifelong commitment to medicine and patient care.
Dr. Liu was well-known in the medical community for his outgoing personality, professionalism, and dedication to orthopedic surgery. A cycling enthusiast for many years, he often participated in competitive and endurance cycling events, frequently training between Taipei and the Miaoli-Hsinchu area.
During his 22-year career at Weigong Hospital, Dr. Liu also served as Director of the Traumatology Department. His leadership was instrumental in guiding the hospital’s trauma team to achieve “Major Trauma Review” emergency medical certification in 2023, earning the institution a severe emergency medical rating. This accomplishment significantly enhanced the hospital’s emergency response capabilities.
Hospital officials described Dr. Liu as a humble, responsible, and highly respected physician who earned the trust of his patients and colleagues alike. Following the incident, Weigong Hospital established an emergency response team to assist his family with arrangements and to ensure continued medical services within the orthopedic department.
