TAIPEI, Taiwan — October 12, 2025. Following a series of reported incidents involving power banks catching fire, the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) has announced new regulations to ensure passenger safety during travel.
Under the updated guidelines, passengers are reminded that power banks should not be stored inside checked or stowed luggage. Instead, they must be kept inside personal carry-on bags at all times when not in use.
Additionally, when using a power bank to charge devices onboard, passengers are required to keep the power bank visible and within reach. This allows quick action in case of overheating or malfunction.
The move comes after recent reports of portable chargers overheating and igniting, prompting transportation authorities to tighten safety protocols across Taiwan’s railway and aviation systems.
THSR emphasized that the new policy aims to prevent potential fire hazards and protect the safety of passengers and train personnel. Station staff will continue to conduct random checks and issue reminders to ensure compliance with the new rules.
The railway operator also urged the public to avoid using counterfeit or low-quality power banks, which are more prone to malfunction.
Passengers are encouraged to check official THSR safety announcements before traveling for the latest updates on allowable electronic devices and items.
