TAIPEI, Taiwan — October 10, 2025 — During Taiwan’s National Day celebration in front of the Presidential Office, Legislative Yuan Speaker and National Day Celebration Committee Chairperson Han Kuo-yu became the center of attention after an apparent mix-up in the ceremony’s sequence.
Following President Lai Ching-te’s National Day address, the next scheduled part of the program was the formal closing announcement and the exit of the Armed Forces Honor Guard, followed by the entrance of the “Heroes on Wheels” parade. However, Han mistakenly invited a group of guests to the stage instead, saying, “Let’s continue… we invite the Japan-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Association…”
Realizing the mistake, Han appeared momentarily frozen, pausing for about five seconds before apologizing and saying, “Sorry, we need to make a small correction.” He then turned around to confirm with event staff before proceeding with the correct order of the program, instructing the honor guard to exit.
Despite the brief confusion, the ceremony soon returned to its normal flow without major disruption.
However, footage of the incident quickly circulated on social media, drawing criticism from netizens. Many expressed embarrassment and frustration, commenting:
-
“It’s so humiliating to have this kind of Legislative Speaker.”
-
“Making mistakes in the Legislative Yuan is one thing, but doing it in front of international guests?”
-
“This is painful to watch.”
-
“He even messed up reading from the script!”
-
“The whole thing looked chaotic.”
While the moment became an online talking point, the rest of the National Day celebration continued smoothly, highlighting both the solemnity and spectacle of the annual event.
