[October 9, 2025] — Cebu, Philippines. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has reported a total of 10,006 aftershocks following the powerful Magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu on September 30, 2025.
According to PHIVOLCS, while the frequency and intensity of the tremors have gradually weakened, aftershocks are still expected to continue in the coming days. Out of the total number, 1,767 aftershocks have been successfully plotted by the agency — these were detected by two or more seismic monitoring stations across the region.
Of these, 44 tremors were strong enough to be felt by residents, while the rest were only recorded by instruments. The aftershocks have ranged in magnitude from 1.0 to 5.1, PHIVOLCS said.
The agency assured the public that continuous monitoring is being carried out through its network of seismic stations in the Visayas to assess potential risks and ground movements.
The Magnitude 6.9 main quake, which jolted Cebu and nearby provinces, caused widespread alarm among residents, particularly in coastal communities. Authorities have since advised the public to remain alert and follow standard safety protocols in case of further seismic activity.
PHIVOLCS also reminded citizens to stay updated through official government channels and avoid spreading unverified information about aftershocks or earthquake predictions.
