MANILA, Philippines (October 7, 2025)— Senate Deputy Minority Leader Rodante Marcoleta has voiced strong criticism of the Judicial and Bar Council’s (JBC) inclusion of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla in the shortlist for Ombudsman, warning that such a nomination could undermine the nation’s rule of law.
Marcoleta raised his concerns during the confirmation hearings of retired Justice Jose Mendoza for his appointment to the JBC. He questioned the council’s integrity in vetting candidates, noting apparent inconsistencies in how complaints are handled. Marcoleta contrasted the current process with past decisions, such as the disqualification of former Senator Leila de Lima, urging the JBC to apply consistent standards in evaluating nominees.
Highlighting statements attributed to Remulla, Marcoleta warned that endorsing a nominee who reportedly believes “the law can be bent” risks eroding public confidence in legal institutions. He emphasized the need for greater scrutiny and accountability when considering high-stakes appointments like the Ombudsman.
“The rule of law should never be compromised,” Marcoleta said, calling on the JBC to uphold transparency and fairness in its selection process.
As the controversy unfolds, public attention is turning to whether the JBC will reconsider its shortlist and how the Senate will address concerns over the integrity of one of the country’s most critical watchdog positions.
