October 7, 2025 – Kaohsiung City, Taiwan
A Mid-Autumn Festival celebration in Kaohsiung’s Nanzi District turned chaotic late last night after a 53-year-old man, identified only by his surname Huang, allegedly lost his temper during a neighborhood dispute and threatened to blow up the entire street using a gas tank.
According to police, the disturbance occurred around 11 p.m. on October 6 in an alley along Lanchang Road. Huang, reportedly upset that his neighbors had complained about the clutter and trash outside his home, carried a gas cylinder into the street, opened the valve, and began shouting threats to ignite an explosion. Witnesses said he also hurled bricks and damaged property in the area.
Neighbors, alarmed by his behavior, recorded the incident and shared the video on social media. Police officers arrived quickly and found Huang still agitated, shouting and accusing officers of assault. For safety reasons, they subdued and restrained him before coordinating with the fire department to ensure the gas was turned off and the area was secured. Huang was later transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Investigators said the suspect has had ongoing disputes with neighbors over household cleanliness and waste piled near adjoining properties. The argument reportedly escalated after residents gathered for Mid-Autumn Festival barbecues outside the alley, which appeared to further provoke Huang.
Authorities confirmed that the Qiaotou District Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the case on charges of intimidation, endangering public safety, assault, and public insult.
Police urged residents to remain calm in neighborhood disputes and to seek mediation or official assistance rather than resorting to violence or threats, especially during public celebrations.
