The Taipei District Court has ordered a woman surnamed Yang to pay NT$900,000 in damages to a woman known as Xiaomei (pseudonym) after finding that Yang had an affair with Xiaomei’s husband, Mr. Xie, despite knowing he was married.
According to court documents, Xiaomei remarried her ex-husband, Mr. Xie, only to later discover that he had been traveling frequently with Yang to destinations such as Japan, Thailand, and South Korea. In July of last year, Yang posted a message on Instagram alongside a photo of herself with Xie, thanking him for “helping [her] achieve sex on the plane.” Shortly afterward, she reportedly messaged Xiaomei, claiming to be pregnant with Xie’s child.
The revelations left Xiaomei emotionally distressed, prompting her to file a NT$1 million lawsuit against Yang for violating her marital rights.
During the trial, Xiaomei presented evidence showing that Yang had posted several social media updates between April and July last year describing intimate encounters with Xie, including references to sexual activities in a hotel and a cinema.
Yang, however, argued that she believed Xie was single when they first met in February and that all contact ceased once she learned he was married in August.
After reviewing witness testimonies and travel records, the judge concluded that Yang was aware of Xie’s marital status and continued the affair regardless. The court noted that Yang’s social media posts and messages—some of which used provocative language—demonstrated a blatant disregard for Xiaomei’s rights and feelings.
Citing Yang’s “arrogant and unapologetic attitude,” the court ruled in favor of Xiaomei, awarding her NT$900,000 in compensation. The decision can still be appealed.
The case has drawn attention online, with many netizens discussing the growing trend of courts in Taiwan recognizing emotional and psychological harm caused by extramarital affairs.
